COURSE DESCRIPTION:
We developed this course to familiarise participants with key concepts and issues in project based learning and to help develop their skills and confidence in implementing it in the classroom. This course about project based learning, is delivered through project based learning methodologies providing participants with keen insight into how it works. The course also focuses on improving general language skills. Participants will work on a real world project focussing on the core stages of project based learning. At the end of the course participants will present the project they developed during the programme. Sharing the experience with professionals from a range of European countries participants can build a portfolio of project ideas to implement in their schools.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is of significant benefit to non-native teachers of English who:
- Need to improve their current General English language levels
- Wish to increase their awareness of current thinking on PBL developments
- Wish to share ideas on best practice methodologies with colleagues from across Europe thereby improving the overall approach to integrating Project Based Learning into the teaching in their schools
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The English tuition programme focus on inproving general language skills. The aims of the general language course are to consolidate participants’ English language skills and to enhance communication in English between teachers and students. The part of the course, which focuses on Project Based Learning (PBL) is made:
- to familiarise participants with key concepts and issues in Project Based Learning and to help develop participants’ skills in implementing PBL in the classroom
- to increase participants’ skill and confidence in the use of tech tools used in PBL
- to cover a variety of school projects for subjects such as English, geography and history with a focus on the tools and resources needed to make PBL accessible to learners through English
- to provide opportunities for improved methodology and creativity to help participants increase their student engagement and retention on their return to their own schools
- to establish contacts and share information with teachers from a variety of European backgrounds and facilitate future networking among these professionals
- to promote awareness of contemporary Ireland
METHODOLOGY:
The General English classes cover all the language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar activities. Class work includes individual, pair and group work, discussions, debates, project work, presentations, written tasks and listening exercises. The PBL input sessions are delivered in a blend of lecture format and practical activities and focus on the planning, development and implementation of PBL in participants’ schools and includes use of web tools and use of PBL for assessment.
FORMAT:
A 2-week course consisting of 53 classroom contact hours plus afternoon cultural visits. English tuition takes place in the first week, followed by Project Based Learning in the second week.
FOLLOW UP:
On the final day of the course, the participants engage in a reflection session in which they are encouraged to examine benefits gained from the course and complete a course evaluation form. Participants are encouraged to keep contact via email and private social networking. Regular follow-up contact is made with the participants after completion of the course. Trainers are available for follow-up advice and support at all times.
