COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A two week course for subject teachers aimed at exploring the principles behind Content and Language Integrated Learning and improving participants’ English language skills. Participants will gain an understanding of how to combine language and subject teaching within a workable lesson framework and also explore a wide variety of practical tasks and activities which can be put to immediate use in the classroom. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience CLIL for themselves through the use of E-Learning platform which gives training in webskills through the use of English, neatly combining subject and language acquisition.

TARGET GROUPS:
- Teacher in primary or secondary school who need to teach a school subject through English.
- Teachers who would like to improve their English language skills.
- Teachers who would like to understand the principles behind planning a CLIL lesson and how to combine language and subject teaching.
- Teachers who are interested in analysing and adapting materials and approaches for use in the CLIL classroom.

AIMS OF THE COURSE:
- To improve participants’ English language skills while exploring the principles behind CLIL
- To provide participants with an understanding of how to combine language and subject teaching within a workable lesson framework
- To explore ways for enhancing learning materials used by participants in the classroom
- To have the opportunity to experience CLIL for themselves through the use of CEC’s E-Learning platform which gives training in webskills through the use of English, neatly combining subject and language acquisition

SAMPLE TIMETABLE:
1) Monday
- Introduction to the course - warmers and icebreakers effective ways of starting lessons
- CLIL 1 – the principals behind CLIL and ways of approaching a CLIL lesson
2) Tuesday
- Language Clinic: Talking about language and skills - terminology of the parts of speech and language skills in EFL
- CLIL2 – lesson planning. Stages of a CLIL lesson and approaches to planning topic based lesson. Identifying potential language difficulties in lessons
3) Wednesday
- Lexis: Ways of presenting vocabulary, conveying meaning and checking understanding of new lexical terms
- Technology in the CLIL classroom; Setting up and using webquests
- Reading: Exploiting and adapting texts for the CLIL classroom
4) Thursday
- Language Clinic: Review of Present Tenses. CLIL model
- Phonology; Features of phonology at word and sentence level – Integrating pronunciation into lessons
5) Friday
- Language Clinic: Review of Past Tenses. CLIL model
- Speaking: – Speaking skills and interaction strategies. Setting up a speaking activity and exploiting them effectively – controlled to freer practice

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY - Free Days

6) Monday
- Writing: – Training good writers; an integrated approach to writing
- E-Learning – blended learning for CLIL
7) Tuesday
- Language Clinic: Conditionals CLIL model lesson
- Use of resources 1: Exploiting and adapting course book materials – criteria for adapting and supplementing
- Technology; Using Wikis and blogs
8) Wednesday
- Listening: Types of listening skills, setting up a listening task– ways to help learners become effective listeners
- Micro-teaching preparation
9) Thursday
- Use of resources 2: Using authentic materials and technology in the classroom
- Micro-teaching practice
10) Friday
- Error Correction; Correction and feedback – when, what, how and who to correct? Correcting spoken and written production – content vs. language
- Testing and assessment: Testing content and language successfully – approaches to test deign in CLIL

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The programme includes:
- 25 Hours per week (20 lessons plus afternoon lectures and visits)
- Use of all pedagogical material
- Maximum of 15 students per class
- Certificate at the end of course
- Afternoon Social and Cultural Programme
